MORGANTOWN — Dale Bonner has made the ultimate leap in college basketball.
After two seasons as the leading scorer at Division II Fairmont State, Bonner is now on scholarship at Baylor, which won the 2021 Division I national championship.
Baylor head coach Scott Drew announced Bonner’s transfer in a press release.
“Dale is someone who we targeted, because he’s a high-character young man with a tremendous work ethic,” Drew said. “He has seen the success we’ve had developing guards, and he wants to continue that tradition. We believe he’s a perfect fit for our program and we’re excited to welcome him into the Baylor Family.”
Bonner led the Falcons in scoring (21.2 ppg) and assists (4.5 apg) as a sophomore. He also led Fairmont State in scoring as a freshman (17.8 ppg) in being named the Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year.
Listed at 6-foot-3 and 175 pounds, Bonner is from Shaker Heights, Ohio. He’s connected on 40.3% (84 of 208) of his 3-point attempts over his career, while also recording 248 assists in 50 games.
He entered the portal in March, after leading the Falcons to a 15-5 record and a trip to the Division II NCAA tournament. He’ll have three seasons of eligibility remaining with the Bears.
Bonner is the second player to transfer to Baylor from a lower NCAA Division in recent years. He follows Freddie Gillespie, who joined the Bears in 2017 after two years at Division III Carleton College.
