MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The University High boys’ lacrosse team took on Wheeling Central Catholic (5-0) at Mylan Stadium Tuesday evening, picking up its second loss on a gutsy end-game play, 9-7.
UHS and WCC started on the slow end, heading into halftime knotted at 2-2. The Hawks (2-2) came out strong in the third quarter, though, to take a 6-4 lead.
Down 8-7 in the final minute of play, UHS decided to run a 10-man ride, pulling the goalie out of the net, to try and get the ball back and tie it. WCC held strong, though, picking up the dagger goal with five seconds on the clock to secure its road win.
UHS was led by Nolan Danhires and Peyton Turner with two goals each. Connor Montgomery, Deven L’Hommiedieu and Evan Acciavatti had one goal each. Daniel Phillips had 15 saves in the loss.
UHS next hosts Preston Wednesday at 7 p.m.
