KINGWOOD — A representative of the Denver Water Board asked Preston County commissioners for funding at the Tuesday morning meeting. Jay Layton, a member of the Denver Water Board, said Denver wants to upgrade its water tank and pump station, as well as its water lines.
Layton said Denver has not upgraded since 1970, and the board has applied for a $349,000 grant from West Virginia Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council, along with a $942,616 loan.
“Raising our rates would hurt the seniors the most,” Layton said. “We have 147 customers, and half of them are on a fixed income.”
County Administrator Kathy Mace asked Sheena Hunt, executive director of the Region VI Planning and Development Council, to send her information about the project.
No further action was taken.
Amanda Pitzer, representing the Preston County Cleanup Committee, presented commissioners with a copy of the committee’s proposed ordinance. Under the proposed ordinance, a property in question must pose a threat to health and/or public safety. If the ordinance passes, a property owner who receives a citation will have 10 days from the receipt of the complaint to request a hearing. The hearing will be set within 20 days and be electronically recorded or recorded by a court reporter.
A question arose about farm land. The cleanup committee has a person involved in agriculture, but commissioner Samantha Stone said that might not always be the case.
“We need to specify that one board member has to be from the agriculture community,” she said.
“If this is a concern, it needs to be addressed before we begin the readings,” Mace said.
In other business, Mace said the Preston County Commission has authorized a one-day rabies clinic from 8 a.m.1 p.m. May 22 in the Kingwood Civic Center parking lot. The service is provided by AVS Mountainland Animal Hospital, and the cost of the shot will be $8 per pet.
A representative from the county assessor’s office will be available at the site to collect 2021-22 dog taxes.
The Preston County Animal Shelter will be closed May 6 and possibly May 7. Mace said the phones and electric will be turned off, while workers put up siding on the building.
She said the X-ray scanner used in the courthouse is being replaced. Mace said if any county municipality is interested in the old one, they can contact her.
