Trinity boys’ hoops falls to Hampshire in sectional championship game

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Mikki Anderson scored 15 points to lead Hampshire past Trinity, 64-54, in the Class AAA Region I Section 2 championship game on Saturday.

Playing in consecutive days, Trinity (8-6) saw three players foul out, including two starters in the loss.

Gavin Jackson led Trinity with 20 points, but the Trojans jumped out to an 18-5 lead in the first quarter and the Warriors had to fight from behind the rest of the game.

James Garbart scored 17 for Trinity and Jaylon Hill added nine.

“Tonight, fatigue of playing back to back caught up with us in the fourth quarter,” Trinity head coach Rich Hill said. “We also had three players foul out which hurt us, but my kids have never stopped battling.”

Trinity will travel to Wheeling Central for the Region I championship game. Wheeling Central defeated North Marion, 53-39, on Saturday.

Morgantown sweeps John Marshall

After taking an 8-1 lead in the second inning, Morgantown High held on for an 8-7 victory in the second game of a doubleheader.

The Mohigans won the first game, 4-0, in what was a continuation from a halted game to open the season.

In the second game, Caleb Cottle had three hits and drove in two runs for the Mohigans and teammate Zach Brennan had two hits, including a triple.

John Marshall came back to score four runs in the top of the seventh, but Brennan came in to close the door.

Clay-Battelle splits with Madonna

BLACKSVILLE — Sydney Wilson struck out 15 to lead the Cee-Bees to a 2-1 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.

Madonna won the second game, 12-4.

Ronda Petrucci scored both of Clay-Battelle’s run in the first game after tripling in the first and in the seventh.

Elyse Moore had the game-winning RBI bunt in the bottom of the seventh to bring Petrucci across the plate.

St. Albans 8, University 0

Kendall Stoffel pitched a complete-game two-hitter and struck out 14 to lead the Red Dragons.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning, when St. Albans scored three to seal the game.

Autumn Stemple also pitched a complete game for the Hawks. None of her eight runs allowed were earned, as UHS committed 10 errors.

Boys’ lacrosse
Morgantown 9, George Washington 8

Jaxon Fielding had three goals and two assists and teammates Daniel Arthurs and Preston Harman added two goals for the Mohigans.

Jay Anderson recorded 10 saves in goal for MHS.

The Mohigans will travel to Capital at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Preston 3, Capital 2

J.J. Townsend, Levi Lowdermilk and Riley Land all scored for the Knights.

Zeke Lilly recorded 10 saves for Preston, which plays Buckhannon-Upshur at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls’ lacrosse
Morgantown 9, Spring Mills 5

Hannah Calvert scored two goals and added an assist for the Mohigans and teammate Rachel Hollander scored twice.

Emme Hunt had 12 saves in goal.

MHS (3-1) plays rival University High at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Boys’ tennis
Morgantown 6, Buckhannon-Upshur 1

Ataes Aggarwal, Max Phillips-Hartley and Bennett Hall won three out of the four singles matches and the Mohigans (6-0) also won all three doubles matches to secure the win.
