Herring Road project moves forward; contract awarded to A.J. Burk

KINGWOOD — A contract has been awarded to a West Virginia contractor for the Herring Road water line extension.

The Herring Road Project was a topic of discussion at the Tuesday evening meeting of the Kingwood Water Board.

Tim Rice, senior engineer of Potesta & Associates, said A.J. Burk from Horner was awarded the contract for parts A and B of the project.

Burk recently completed an Abandoned Mine Land Grant water project in Newburg.

Rice is the engineer working with the Kingwood Water Board on the project.

He said contract terms are being finalized for the two projects.

Rice said part B of the contract will be completed first.  Part B is a water line extension for Bradley Memorial Drive and Big Bend Drive. The base bid for the project was $128,849.50.

Part A of the contract will include All Hollow Road and Concord Road. The base bid for this project was $1,314,496.75.

When completed, the water line extensions from the two projects will provide water to roughly 60 new customers.

Funds for part A are being be provided through an AML grant. Part B is being funded through AML and the Infrastructure and Jobs Development Council.

Rice said the contractor has 270 days to complete the projects, once work begins.

Earlier in the project, Kingwood Water Board members received paperwork from environmental specialists in Charleston about tree clearing on Herring Road.

Once the project is started, a small bat box might have to be provided. The Indiana bat and the Virginia big-eared bat are federal endangered species found in West Virginia, according to the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources.
