MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Preston Harman and Cole Herald combined for seven goals and the Morgantown boys’ lacrosse team defeated St. Albans 19-2 Saturday.
Morgantown opened up strong and powered over the Red Dragons throughout, as Harman had a day with four goals and one assist. Herald tacked on three goals, Daniel Arthurs had two, and 10 other MHS players found the back of the net.
Further, Arthurs and Jack Prokopchuk were credited with two assists each, while Harman, Aiden Boone, Jack Kurth, Christian Wolfe, Michael Brown and Jack Grushecky each had one. Brown won all eight of his faceoffs.
Jay Anderson and Jonathan DeBastiani were each credited with a save in the win.
University 22, St. Albans 0
The University boys’ lacrosse team had a dominant season-opener against St. Albans, defeating the Dragons 22-0 behind eight goals by Peyton Turner.
Devin L’Hommiedieu and Conner Montgomery each added three goals, Nolan Danhires had two, and six other players all secured one. Grant Oxley was credited with two assists, while Montgomery, Danhires, Cooper Haines and Evan Acciavatti all had one.
Goalkeepers Daniel Phillips and Aiden Arnett each saved two shots to maintain the shutout.
UHS returns to action on Wednesday at 5:30 pm at George Washington.
Baseball
Morgantown 18, Linsly 0
Aaron Jamison and Quincy Thornton combined for three home runs and eight RBIs, and Reed Bailey and Jacob Kennel combined for a total of 50 pitches as Morgantown shut out Linsly 18-0 at Mylan Park Saturday afternoon.
Morgantown opened up hot, putting up six runs in the first inning and five in the second to go up 11-0 on Linsly. After holding off Linsly again in the third and tacking on one more run, the Mohigans once again maintained Linsly’s goose egg and delivered the final, six-run dagger in the fourth inning to end the game early.
Jamison was 3 of 4 and Thornton was 1 of 2 from the plate, and both had four RBIs to lead MHS in the win. Bailey picked up the win on the mound, pitching three solid innings allowing just two hits and one walk.
Linsly’s Kobe Hill took the loss, allowing six runs on three hits and two walks in his one inning on the mound.
Morgantown 6, Musselman 1
Morgantown put up six early runs to hold off Musselman, keeping the Applemen off the board in all but one inning.
The Mohigans found two runs in the first inning before Aaron Jamison, Quincy Thornton and Zach Brennan combined for four runs in the second. Musselman responded in the third when Bayden Hartman found home plate on a stolen base. Despite not scoring again, Morgantown managed to keep Musselman off the board as well, winning in seven.
Brennan led the team at the plate, and his lone hit of the night came as a two-run double to pad the Mohigans’ lead. Jamison, Zach Owens, Ryan Fluharty, Ty Galusky, and Domenic Colasonte all accounted for hits in the win.
Jeffrey Poach led the Mohigans on the mound, pitching three innings and allowing one run on five hits. He struck out two and walked two. Fluharty, Aidan Frombach and Brennan all found time on the mound, with Brennan being the only one to allow more hits (2), albeit no runs.
JV Baseball
Linsly 13, Morgantown JV 0
Linsly got ahead early and had three consecutive four-run innings to shut out Morgantown’s JV team Saturday, 13-0.
Jack Selmon got Linsly on the board in the first inning on a ground out before eventually leading the private school with two more RBIs down the stretch. He was 2 of 3 from the plate and also led the team on the mound through five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 11.
Hunter Dakan pitched five innings for Morgantown, allowing five runs on five hits. He had four strikeouts and committed three errors. Three other pitchers saw action for MHS through the final inning.
Softball
Steubenville 9, University 3
Steubenville jumped out to an early lead and finished with five runs late to put away University 9-3 in Game 1 of the Hawks’ action-packed day.
Lakyn Blackburn put runs on the board in the first, bringing in two on a home run. The Hawks tied things up with two runs of their own in the top of the third, but Steubenville responded with two in the bottom of the inning behind a stolen base and sac fly by Blackburn.
A solo run in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth put the Hawks away for good. UHS only added one at the top of the seventh.
Blackburn got the win for the Big Red, pitching all seven innings. She gave up three runs on six hits. Autumn Stemple took the loss for UHS, allowing nine runs on eight hits.
Blackburn led the way going 2 of 3 at the plate and securing four RBIs.
Poland Seminary 23, University 2
Poland Seminary and University opened their afternoon game with one-run first innings, but Poland opened up the scoring in the second and third with 13 runs between the two to hand UHS its second straight loss of the day.
Abby Farber and Lauren Huebsch each picked up single RBIs in the first inning for Poland Seminary and UHS, respectively, but Poland, led by a Connie Cougras single got the runs flowing in the second inning. Following its three runs in the second, Poland pulled away for good with 10 runs in the third behind Cameryn Lattanzio, Farber, Leanne Williams, Jackie Grisdale, Katie McDonald and Mary Brant.
Unable to regain any ground, UHS conceded after the fifth inning.
McDonald got the win for Poland Seminary, allowing two runs and four hits over 3 innings. Hannah Andrigo took the loss for UHS, allowing 21 hits and 23 runs. She struck out just three.
Brant was 4 of 5 from the plate and secured a home run and triple to lead Poland with 4 RBIs. McDonald, who also went 4 of 5 from the plate, and Grisdale (1 of 6) brought in three each.
Track and field
Morgantown, University at Russ Parsons Invitational
Morgantown and University both had good showings at the first track meet in two years, the Russ Parsons Invitational at Parkersburg High.
For the MHS girls’ team, Yelena Davidson (400 meter dash, 1:02.82), Irene Riggs (1,600 meter, 5:06.97), and the 4×800 relay team comprised of Jennifer Opalko, Madeline Gump, Amelia Summers and Anna Lester (10:17.98) secured first place finishes in track events.
The University girls also saw top finishes, as Caroline Kirby picked up a win in the 800 meter at 2:22.64 and Sierra Lanham won the long jump at 17-04.
On the boys’ side, Larry Josh Edwards (800 meter, 1:55.24). Jordan Thomas (3,200 meter, 9:38.64) and the 4×800 A team comprised of Ryan Blohm, Thomas, Drew Zundell and Edwards (8:18.58) all secured wins for the Hawks. Daminn Cunningham picked up a win in field events, winning the long jump t 20-11.25.
The Mohigans didn’t not take a top finish in any event, but had a slew of second-place finishes.
