MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Kysre Gondrezick doesn’t exactly know what the next chapter in her life will look like.
That much depends on what happens during the WNBA Draft at 7 p.m. Thursday.
“What I do know is that I still have a lot of chapters left to write and I’m still the author,” the former West Virginia standout guard said Wednesday. “I feel like I still have a lot I can accomplish in basketball, so this is an exciting time for me, to be sure.”
Gondrezick was a first-team all-Big 12 performer as a senior, averaging 19.5 points and guiding the Mountaineers to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
She is projected to be picked somewhere in the third round of the three-round draft, which could make her a long shot to make it into the league.
That hasn’t kept WNBA teams from showing interest.
“I’ve heard a lot from both Indiana and Seattle, but I think I’ve talked to just about every team in the league,” she said. “Most of the teams have asked me about my style of play and how I could be a fit. They ask me about my strengths and weaknesses.
“They’ve also talked to me about what it means to be a pro on and off the court. It’s definitely been an educational time for me.”
If Gondrezick is selected, she would become the ninth former WVU player to be picked by a WNBA team and the fifth since 2016.
To help prepare her for the next level, Gondrezick has joined forces with former NBA star John Lucas and has been training with him in Los Angeles.
“We’ve been working a lot on getting quicker with my ball-handling and also on making reads off of pick-and-rolls,” Gondrezick said. “A lot of the stuff we’re doing is designed to get me quicker and help me create more space for my shot.”
It is now a waiting game, one that could end with that once-in-a-lifetime moment.
“I’m trying to enjoy the moment as much as I can,” Gondrezick said. “There’s jitters. There’s questions I ask myself on who may be interested or which team may take me.
“For the most part, I’ve tried to be myself. I don’t think I’m a bad person. I’m humbled just to be in the conversation of the draft and humbled to know their are teams interested.”
