Stemple allows one run in 1-0 win over John Marshall

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Autumn Stemple had a near-perfect night at Mylan Park, allowing one hit and zero runs as the University softball team edged visiting John Marshall, 1-0.

Stemple logged 13 strikeouts in the victory. The only hit came against her was registered in the seventh inning by Kadence Pettit. The right-hander pitched all seven innings to earn her first win of the season.

Lauren Huebsch was perfect at the plate, going 3 for 3 to lead the Hawks. Stemple, who went 1 of 3 ar the plate, logged the lone RBI of the day, bringing in Huebsch in the sixth inning.

Tessa Wise picked up the loss for the Monarchs. She pitched 5 1/3 innings, striking out six and allowing five hits and one run. She walked three.

University boys’, Bridgeport girls’ sweep meet

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The University boys’ tennis team swept Bridgeport, 7-0, and the Indians girls’ team downed the Hawks, 7-0, in the two teams’ first meeting.

No. 1 Andre Barcinas defeated Ty Gaudy, 8-0, No. 2 Tommy McClellan and No. 4 Jack Giobbia defeated Paul Hong and Kyle Walker, 8-1, respectively, and No. 3 Jameson Walters downed Jacob Holbert, 8-3, in singles action.

In doubles, No. 2 Walters and Giobbia downed Holbert and Walker, 8-0; No. 1 Barcinas and McClellan (No. 1) defeated Gaudy-Hong, 8-1; and No. 3 Salah Abunnaja and Julian Stealey defeated Jennson Clayton and Gregory Noong in a tight No. 3 doubles match. The Hawks prevailed 7-5 in the tiebreaker.

“[Our] boys played strong,” UHS assistant coach Tom McClellan said. “All four singles positions are seniors and got out of the gate fast. Excellent measured and deliberate play for the [Nos.] 1-4 singles.”

On the girls’ side, No. 1 Virginia Noone defeated Deah Gharib, 8-6; No. 2 Anna Duvall downed Emma Rusiecki, 8-1; No. 3 Chloe Stears defeated Sydney Takacs 8-3; and No. 4 Ellie Hart edged Brooklyn Rutledge, 8-6.

In doubles action, the Indian’s picked up three wins with the closest battle happening on the No. 1 court between Noone-Hart and Gharib-Emma Rusiecki with BHS prevailing, 9-7.

“The girls’ team played well but is very young with the varsity team having four freshmen starters, one sophomore, and two juniors,” McClellan said. “A good first match with plenty of strong points from which to build upon.”

Morgantown girls dominate Brooke on the road

WELLSBURG, W.Va. – The Morgantown girls’ tennis team opened its season on the right foot, wiping out Brooke, 7-0.

Senior and No. 1 Emme McKnight had an impressive start to her final season, notching an 8-0 win in singles and teaming with freshman Amy Lu to post an 8-0 doubles victory. No. 3 Kassie Regules and No. 4 Samantha Carver also won, 8-0, and No. 2 Amy Lu defeated her opponent, 8-1.

Aside from McKnight and Lu’s doubles win, No. 2 Regules and Carver and No. 3 Amber Li and Sophia Mascari won their matches, 8-1.
