WVU earns commitment from Massachusetts offensive lineman Sully Weidman

By Keenan Cummings

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia continues to bulk up the future of the offensive line, and the program took another step toward accomplishing that with the commitment of Brookline (Mass.) Dexter athlete Sully Weidman.

Weidman, at 6-foot-5 and 300 pounds, had collected offers from WVU, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Indiana, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Arizona State, Virginia and Syracuse, among others. But he shut down his recruitment after recently taking a self-guided campus tour to Morgantown.

That wasn’t the only trip Weidman took, as he also stopped at Pittsburgh, Virginia, and Nebraska before ultimately whittling down his list to a top three of WVU, Nebraska and Indiana, but the pull to WVU was too strong after he was able to see the program up close and personal.

The Rivals.com 3-star prospect couldn’t meet with the coaches due to the current recruiting dead period, but was able to tour the campus and get a feel for how he could fit into the program. Turns out, that experience checked all the boxes, as he announced his pledge only a week later.

Possessing ideal size and athleticism for the offensive tackle spot, Weidman plays with a physical edge and is impressive in the run-blocking department. He uses his length and feet well to position himself in pass blocking, but has a mean streak that would make any offensive line coach excited.

That versatility likely played a significant role in the pursuit of Weidman, as he could fit into multiple spots at the college level and is equipped with ready-made size.

Weidman was recruited by offensive line coach Matt Moore, and the two developed a solid connection that played a significant role in his decision-making.

The pledge of Weidman is the third overall for the Mountaineers in the 2022 class, and each of those have the ability to play on the offensive line in the future. It is a strategy to build from the inside out, as the program looks to fortify their ranks up front moving ahead.

Even with two true offensive linemen in the class with Weidman and Wallingford (Conn.) Choate Rosemary Hall offensive lineman Charlie Katarincic set to start there, and the possibility Spring Valley tight end Corbin Page could grow into one, the work is far from done.

Expect the Mountaineers to add several more up front in the coming weeks and months with Bluefield (Va.) Graham offensive lineman Brody Meadows, Cleveland Heights (Ohio) offensive lineman Maurice Hamilton, Leo (Ind.) offensive lineman Landen Livingston, and several others on that short list.

WVU is building from the inside out and has started off strong in that arena.
