MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Morgantown High girls’ basketball team leaned on its defense in its 60-23 win over Bridgeport on Saturday, March 27.
Morgantown limited Bridgeport to make just nine total field goals and shoot 23.1% from the field.
“Really proud of our kids effort on both ends of the floor. To hold a team like Bridgeport to 23 points is quite an accomplishment,” MHS coach Jason White said. “Offensively, I thought we did a good job of executing sets that led to shooting 60 percent from the field.”
MHS (5-1) jumped out to an early lead, finishing the first quarter with a 20-point advantage.
Kaitlyn Ammons and Cat Wassick each led the Mohigans in scoring with 15 points.
Morgantown will play again at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 29, against Buckhannon-Upshur.
Trinity 71, Moorefield 45
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Warriors jumped out to an early 13-point lead against Moorefield after the first quarter and was able to turn it into a 26-point win.
Jac Smith led Trinity (5-2) in scoring with 18 points. Olivia Austin and Maggie Mercure each added 13. Smith also notched three steals, four assists and five rebounds on her 18th birthday. Kyndel Kisner added 10 rebounds.
“We played our best game today against a good Moorefield team,” TCS coach Mike Baldy said. “Offensively, we are really starting to shine, but we have to get way better defensively, and we will.”
The Warriors will play again at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at Magnolia.
Clay-Battelle 60, Tygarts Valley 48
BLACKSVILLE, W.Va. — Despite trailing after the first quarter, the Cee-Bees managed to outscore Tygarts Valley by 16 points the rest of the way to cap off the 12-point win.
Liv Ammons scored 25 points for Clay-Battelle (7-4), making three 3-pointers, and Cam Watson added 10.
C-B will play again at 7 p.m. Monday, March 29, at Cameron.
Preston 65, Lewis County 45
KINGSWOOD, W.Va. — Michelle Thomas and Carsynn Sines each scored 16 points to lead the Knights to their 20-point win.
Going into halftime with just a four-point advantage, Preston pulled away due to a team effort — outscoring Lewis County 36-20.
Breanna Sphar added 11 points for PHS.
The Knights will play again at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 29, at Robert C. Byrd.
Boys’ basketball
Clay-Battelle 50, Weir 40
BLACKSVILLE, W.Va. — Gavin Moore scored 24 points in the Cee-Bees win over Weir. Mojo Chisler added 14 points for Clay-Battelle (9-1).
“It’s been a long week with traveling, playing against some tough teams,” C-B coach David Joyce said. “To finish 3-0 this week makes it all well worth it. Weir had some nice players … but we used our inside presence with outside shooting to come out on top.”
The Cee-Bees will play again at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at Cameron.
University 55, Spring Mills 24
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — After a slugging start to the game — scoring just nine points in the first quarter — the Hawks managed to outscore Spring Mills 46-22 the rest of the way.
Ryan Niceler led University (7-1) in scoring with 17 points. Blake Barkley scored 14 and Elijah Jackson added 11.
UHS will play again at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, against Buckhannon-Upshur.
Trinity 57, Moorefield 53
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Warriors jumped to out to an early lead over Moorefield and managed to hang on in the second half to get the win.
Gavin Jackson led Trinity (4-2) in scoring with 18 points. James Garbart netted 15 and James Bourne added 12.
TCS led by 10 points at the half and after the third quarter, but allowed Moorefield to creep back in the game in the fourth. The Warriors managed to hold on, though, and secure the four-point win.
The Warriors will play again at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, at Notre Dame.
JV girls’ basketball
Morgantown 49, Bridgeport 9: Makayla Chipps scored 13 points, Avonna Brown netted 12 and Emma Howell added 11 for Morgantown (6-1).
