Expansion Project No Longer Up in the Air

The first phase of Morgantown Municipal Airport’s long-awaited runway extension project is officially underway.

Area officials gathered Wednesday at the airport for the project’s groundbreaking, which will add 1,001 feet to the 5,199-foot runway. It’s expected to take five years and cost $50 million.

In February, Morgantown City Council voted unanimously in support of a contract totaling $5,753,978.10 with Doss Enterprises for Phase 1 of the extension project.

The majority of Phase 1 will consist of erosion and sedimentation control, clearing and grubbing, structure removal, and the construction of an airport perimeter road, among other efforts.

The Dominion Post has previously reported  the extension has been a talking point and a priority for the city for well over a decade. It received the needed clearances from the Federal Aviation Administration in November  2019.

The city received just under $7.8 million from the FAA last April for the work. Three months later, an additional $1.9 million in federal funding was awarded.
