PREP ROUNDUP: No. 5 Morgantown upsets No. 1 Martinsburg on the road 65-45

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – The fifth-ranked Morgantown boys’ basketball team upset top-ranked Martinsburg on the road Saturday, defeating the Bulldogs, 65-45, behind three double-digit scorers.

Carson Poffenberger led the Mohigans (2-0) with 20 points, while Sha-Ron Young hit 17 and Luke Bechtel added 12. Anthony Smith led the Bulldogs (0-1) with 10 in the loss.

Morgantown and Martinsburg ended the first quarter tied at 17, but a strong second quarter by the Mohigans saw them jump ahead of the Bulldogs 39-25 at the half. Morgantown outscored Martinsburg in both the third and fourth quarters to seal the upset.

“We weren’t as efficient offensively as we have been but our defense and rebounding were terrific,” MHS coach Dave Tallman said. “I’m proud of our guys for competing the way they did. It was a total team effort.” 

The Mohigans return to action Sunday, staying in Berkeley County to face No. 9 Musselman at 1 p.m. It’s the team’s third Eastern Panhandle opponent in three days.

Trinity Christian 92, Turkeyfoot 65

Trinity overwhelmed Turkeyfoot (Pa.) Saturday, 92-65, to pick up win No. 2.

Gavin Jackson (21), James Bourne (21), Levi Teets (11) and James Gabart all led the Warriors (2-0), while just two players, Will Toye (30) and Blake Nicholson (24) led Turkeyfoot.

Trinity outscored Turkeyfoot every quarter before exploding for nearly 30 points in the fourth to seal the game.

“Today we came out a little sluggish from playing last night, but we picked it up in the second half on both sides of the ball,” TCS first-year coach Rick Hill said. “We also had better balance scoring today.”

The Warriors return to action on Tuesday at home, hosting Linsly at 7 p.m.

Girls’ basketball

Huntington 72, University 55

HUNTINGTON — University picked up its first loss of the season on the road, falling to Huntington, 72-55.

The Hawks (1-1) were led by three girls in double figures: Ella Simpson (11), Emily Sharkey (11) and Ashlyn Weaver (10).

Huntington outpaced UHS in every quarter, though the Hawks managed to hold on in the in the first half.

UHS next faces Weir on Monday at 7 p.m. in Weirton.

Trinity defeats Grafton 58-25

Jaclyn Smith netted 12 points and Ruby Smith-McCrobie added 11 to lead Trinity Christian over Grafton Saturday afternoon, 58-25.

Kambree Delay paced Grafton with 10 points.

Freshman Paige Smith stood out on defense, leading the Warriors (3-0) with five steals, while Maggie Mercure was solid on boards with a team-high eight.

Trinity and Grafton were tight in the first half, with the Warriors holding a five-point lead at halftime.

They were able to snap out of their funk in the second half, however, dropping 31 points and holding Grafton to just seven.

“We were clearly tired from last night’s game at Madonna, but we came out and played well in the second half and we pulled away.”

Trinity gets a short break until Tuesday when they hit the road for Williamstown to face Wood County Christian. Tip is set for 7 p.m.

Middle school boys’ basketball

Central Preston 8s 78, South Preston 17: Chayce Adams led the Wildcats (1-0) with 26 points while Jared Haskiell added 20 and Easton Hayes had 10. Cameron Newlon led the Yellowjackets with 7 points.
