BLACKSVILLE — The Clay-Battelle boys’ basketball team, with high expectations coming into the season, got off to a roaring start Friday night, blowing out Tygarts Valley 74-43 at home.
“t was a great feeling to be able to watch this group of young men get back on the basketball floor tonight,” coach Josh Kisner said. “They demonstrated excellent teamwork and execution early on to pull away with the victory. We still have some work to do but we are headed in the right direction.”
The Cee-Bees (1-0) were led by 29 points from Mojo Chisler, while Gavin Moore (17) also scored in double figures.
C-B will play at Valley-Wetzel at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Trinity 61, Madonna 51
The Warriors (1-0) got off on the right foot under new head coach Rick Hill with a win over the Blue Dons.
“I’m so proud of the way these boys came out too play,” Hill said. “This group of kids are gritty, and for as young as we are, determined to make some noise. Gavin Jackson an James Bourne are a special duo, too.”
Trinity had two players scorer over 20 points, led by Jackson, with 27 points, and Bourne, with 26 points.
The Warriors will play at Turkeyfoot (Pa.) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Girls’ basketball
Linsly 75, Clay-Battelle 40
WHEELING — The Cee-Bees (0-1) opened with a tough but disappointing loss to begin the season.
Liv Ammons scored 22 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead C-B. Linsly was led by Carleigh Grimm, with 17 points, while Haley Heitz added 15.
University 62, John Marshall 48
GLENDALE — The Hawks earned a season-opening road win behind a balanced effort offensively.
Emily Sharkey (15) ,Lauren Dean (13), Ashlyn Weaver (13) and Eden Gibson (10) all scored in double figures. A big third quarter by UHS (1-0) helped break the game open as it outscored the Monarchs 25-15 in the frame.
“We had good even scoring, the first half was pretty sloppy,” assistant coach Dave Boggs said “We played much better in second half, knocked down shots and had a 18-point lead with a minute left in the game.”
The Hawks will play Huntington at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Middle school girls’ basketball
Mountaineer 7s 53, Suncrest 21: Brianna Fox led the Mounties with 29 points.
Suncrest 8s 38, Mountaineer 36: Maddie Antonini led the Mounties with nine points.
