MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia isn’t done adding to the 2021 recruiting class quite yet, but the Mountaineers have already gotten a head start on the following class by securing a verbal from Josiah Davis.
Davis, 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, is a 2022 prospect that attends Teays Valley Christian and initially received an offer from the Mountaineers in August. The talented guard is originally from Ontario, but came over as a sophomore and averaged 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists per game last season.
Assistants Ron Everhart and Larry Harrison were central figures in his recruitment as well as head coach Bob Huggins as the Mountaineers were the first high major to extend a scholarship offer.
The Canadian import initially came to the states to focus on developing his skill set as a true point guard and he has certainly come a long way on that front.
“I’ve had a lot of people tell us he reminds us of West Virginia point guards. He’s extremely strong, physical and wants to get up in you,” Teays Valley head coach Travis Tarr said. “He will pressure you 94-feet if he needs to and is somebody that wants to be coached hard.”
If those traits sound like a perfect match for what the Mountaineers want in their guard play it’s because it is. He takes pride on his play on the defensive end, while he has developed into the type of leader that you want at the point guard position.
Davis took an unofficial visit to Morgantown prior to the start of the recruiting dead period and the Big 12 program had developed a close connection with the coaches.
That connection helped Davis build a comfort level with the school and made the decision to call West Virginia his home for at least the next four years as well.
“I really feel like the playing style fits me best,” he said. “I feel comfortable here and I love the environment here so I’m ready to stay.”
Davis is the first commitment for WVU in the 2022 class.
