Preston Commission revisits roads

KINGWOOD – Last week, Preston officials met with West Virginia Division of Highways engineers to discuss roads. At Tuesday’s Preston County Commission meeting, one commissioner suggested that meeting become a regular occurrence.

Commissioner Samantha Stone said the recent meeting with DOH engineers was a good one, but added she would like to meet with Michael Cronin, District 4 engineer/manager to further discuss the roads the DOH is reclaiming in 2021.

Commissioners recently met with Darby Clayton, deputy state engineer of operations, and Aaron Stevens, design engineer, from the Division of Highways, and members of the Preston County Office of Emergency Management.

Part of the meeting involved a discussion about the reclaiming of the following 12 Preston County roads: North Mountaineer Highway, Kingwood Pike, South Preston Highway, Campground Road, Herring Road, Ridge Road, Dogtown Road, Camp Dawson/Country Club Road, John Mile, Veterans Memorial Highway, Ash Polo, and Farm Gate/Barn.

Stone said she would like to make the meeting a yearly one.

Kristy Ash, executive director of the Preston County Chamber of Commerce, requested $5,000 in funding. Ash said PCCC lost 80% of its second quarter funding due to COVID and the inability to hold fundraisers.

She said $2,600 of the $5,000 would be used to create a membership directory. Ash said the directory would serve as a valuable tool for members and businesses.

She said the remaining $2,400 would be used for the 2021 State of the County event.

Although PCCC has not held recent meetings due to COVID-19, Ash wants to continue holding regular meetings beginning in March.

In other business, a discussion to replace a vehicle requested by Duane Hamilton, E911 director, was tabled until next week’s meeting.

County Administrator Kathy Mace told commissioners renovations for an additional room to be used by the Prosecuting Attorney’s office will take maintenance and IT work. She said the room should be ready by March.
