Plaza Azteca to open later this year in former Roosters location

MORGANTOWN — Plaza Azteca, a casual sit-down Mexican restaurant chain, will open a location in Suncrest Towne Centre later this year in the space formerly occupied by Roosters, which closed in May after four years.

A sign in front of the former Roosters announced Morgantown’s newest restaurant, but details of Plaza Azteca’s opening date were not yet available. When open, the Suncrest location will be chain’s first location in West Virginia.

Plaza Azteca, based in Virginia Beach, Va., was started in 1994 by two investors from the Mexican state of Jalisco. The chain now has more than 40 locations in Virginia, North Carolina, southern New England and Pennsylvania, including restaurants in Robinson Township and White Oak in suburban Pittsburgh. The closest Plaza Azteca to Morgantown is in Washington, Pa.

The chain, whose motto is “The Shortcut to Mexico,” offers entrée and appetizer choices that are a blend of traditional Mexican dishes and Tex-Mex staples such as nachos and fajitas, as well as staples such as tacos, burritos and quesadillas. Entrée prices are less than $20.

Besides Plaza Azteca, other dining options at Suncrest Towne Centre include Bacon Bourbon and Beer, Bartini Prime, Primanti Brothers, and Crab Shack Caribba, to name a few.
