MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — In what many would consider a surprising move, WVU starting cornerback Dreshun Miller announced Thursday he entered the transfer portal.
In a Twitter post, Miller thanked the Mountaineers’ coaches and head coach Neal Brown for the opportunity. Miller started nine of 10 games last season, breaking up eight passes and grabbing one interception.
A highly-touted prospect out of Eastern Arizona Community College, Miller was expected to make major contributions in 2019 but could not get healthy, ultimately redshirting. He is the eighth scholarship to enter the portal (first starter) since the season concluding with the Liberty Bowl win against Army — quarterback Austin Kendall, offensive linemen Briason Mays and Blaine Scott, linebacker Charlie Benton, wide receiver Ali Jennings, running back Alec Sinkfield and safety Noah Guzman.
Offensive lineman Junior Uzebu, cornerback Tae Mayo, defensive lineman Quay Mays and wide receivers Keion Wakefield and Zack Dobson entered the portal before the regular season ended.
Currently, there are nearly 2,000 players in the transfer portal. The NCAA announced players do not need to sit out a season and are immediately eligible after transfer.
In Miller’s absence, expect sophomores Daryl Porter Jr. and David Vincent-Okoli, and senior Jackie Matthews to be involved in the competition for that spot. Junior Nicktroy Fortune started all 10 games opposite of Miller at the other cornerback position.
Miller’s position coach the last two seasons, Jahmile Addae, left for Georgia in January. Neal Brown announced Addae’s replacement, ShaDon Brown, this week, coming over from Louisville.
