MORGANTOWN — Digital library cards have become the newest addition to the list of services offered by the Morgantown Public Library System.
The digital cards are being offered in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in an increased demand for remote card access to the library’s content. The program was created especially for those who are homebound, high-risk or uncomfortable entering public buildings.
The new service grants patrons full access to the library’s digital collections, which have been curated for all ages. More than 100,000 ebooks and audiobooks are available through the digital collections.
Comics, magazines, movies and music, as well as genealogical research tools, tutor assistance, language lessons and professional development training are also accessible through the digital collections.
According to Sarah Palfrey, library director, those who take advantage of the service will have access to thousands of audiobook options.
“The digital library allows us to purchase more books than our shelves could ever physically hold, offering a wider variety of materials for readers of all ages,” Palfrey said. “This opens up the possibility of exploring more genres or reading more backlists from a less popular author.”
Palfrey said all materials are purchased by the library in accordance with collection development policies, which include reading reviews, evaluating usage and patron requests.
“It’s very exciting that we now have an easier way to connect the people of Monongalia County to our extensive collective of digital materials,” Palfrey said.
Digital library cards are being offered free of charge to any Monongalia County resident. Those with general library cards don’t need to sign up for a digital card – they already have access to the digital and physical collections.
Interested individuals should fill out the digital library card application (http://www.mympls.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/fillable-card-applicationx2.pdf) and email the completed application to askmympls@gmail.com.
At this time, digital library card applications cannot be processed over the phone, but applications can still be completed in-person at any Morgantown Public Library branch location.
