No one was injured in a fire at Star City’s Best Western Mountaineer lnn early Thursday morning.
“We woke up to the alarms going off and we were all rushed outside,” said Desiree Lambert. “…There was smoke in the hallway and when we got out here we kept asking questions and no one knew what was going on.”
The fire damage was contained to one bathroom with smoke damage in the second floor hallway, Star City Police Chief Thomas Varndell said.
Varndell, another officer and a West Virginia State Fire Marshal were at the hotel Thursday morning.
He said the department was waiting on the fire marshal’s report to determine if the fire was “anything other than accidental” and if it was not an accident, charges would be brought accordingly.
Lambert said she overhead the fire was arson and they were looking for a woman and two men.
“Rumors are rumors until they’re proven otherwise,” Varndell said.
The general manager of the motel did not wish to comment. However, Lambert’s stay was compensated, she said.
The Cassville, Granville, Star City and Westover Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the fire at 1:10 a.m., according to MECCA 911.
