Throwing leagues have started at Star City facility
Ever have the urge to just chuck an ax across the room?
The three 2021 leagues at Mountain Man Axe Throwing in Star City have started.
Mondays feature Junior League for ages 10-15; Beginner League, for those with an average score below 47 will throw Tuesdays and Competitive League takes place Wednesdays. Check-in starts at 6 p.m. and throwing begins at 6:30 p.m. for all leagues.
And don’t worry if you’ve never thrown, throwers are a friendly bunch, Matt Lalka said.
“It’s kind of this weird competition where you want to win but at the same time all the competitors I’ve met are willing to help you get better,” he said. Everyone is interested in growing the sport and increasing the overall skill level.
The first week of beginner league is free, after which it costs $110 for eight weeks. Participants gain a world ranking in the World Axe Throwing League and can qualify for tournaments.
Coaches are available to provide technical throwing advice and even help with picking out an ax, Lalka said.
According to WATL rules, the winner is determined by the highest score after 10 throws. A bullseye is six points while the fifth ring is one point. A special kind of shot, the “killshot throw,” awards eight points.
“Eventually, if they get good enough, they can come into the competitive league,” Lalka said. And the competition there is serious. One of Mountain Man’s coaches was previously ranked No. 1 in the world.
Even the beginner’s league has serious competitors. A 13-year-old and a 15-year-old both became skilled enough to leave Junior League and compete with adults in the beginner league, Lalka said.
Mountain Man is on Industrial Avenue in Star City.
