Laurelle Smith, 73, of Fairmont, passed away on Jan. 3, 2021, at her residence in Fairmont. She was born Aug. 13, 1947, in Morgantown. She was the daughter of the late James Junior and Sylvia Opal (Wilson) Smith.
Laurelle retired from Verizon as a consultant, however she had spent many years in food service. She also worked at the Pentagon as a secretary for several years. Laurelle was most happy when spending time with family, which was a big part of her life. Laurelle was Catholic by faith, but had recently attended the Central Church of the Nazarene in Fairmont. She loved animals. Over the last few years she had lost three of her beloved dogs, Sammie, Lazarus and J.R., whom she loved dearly. Laurelle also adored her cat, Rosebud, who is left behind to grieve her loving human. Laurelle actively supported several animal rescue groups and enjoyed following the rescued pet pages on Facebook. She was also a member of the Fairmont Women’s Club and WTCU. Until COVID-19 changed her world, Laurelle had a weekly dinner date with her cousins (“The Golden Girls”), Merry Lee Powell, Kitty Johnson and Doris Christy.
Laurelle is survived by one niece and three nephews, Erica Janes-McCarty (Mark), of Fairmont, Duane Janes and his wife Lorraine, who was consistently by Laurelle’s side the final weeks of her life, Raymond (Valerie) Janes and Ronald (Billie) Janes Jr., all of Morgantown; great-nieces, Theresa and Sylvia Janes, Madison and Karson Janes, Carrie Hull, River Spacht and Morgan and Harley Janes; and one great-nephew, Nathaniel Janes (Samantha) and their daughter, Quinnley, Laurelle’s great-great-niece. She is also survived by two very special friends, Joanna Johnson and Joni Johnson Gray (Michael), who always included her in their Johnson Family functions and were wonderful in helping to care for Laurelle in her final months.
In addition to her parents, Laurelle was preceded in death by her sister, Lonabell Janes Knisell in 2014.
