Board members consider covers for dumpster
KINGWOOD — The Preston County Solid Waste Authority received a $9,000 e-recycling grant.
Don Smith, who represents the Preston County Commission on the authority, said he mailed the necessary papers for the grant but was told his request didn’t arrive in Charleston.
He said he then emailed the necessary papers and the money was deposited in the solid waste account the same day.
In 2019, Paul Dorsey of Infinite Electronics Recycling of Weirton, who provided the e-recycling service for the county, estimated it received between 40,000 and 50,000 pounds of recyclables.
Board members are considering covers for their dumpster used by the Terra Alta Dairy Queen and BFS.
The dumpster is used as a drop-off for recyclable cardboard.
At its November meeting, board members approved the purchase of a $1,950, 8-foot-by-12-foot building to cover its dumpster at Hopemont.
A discussion ensued about the possibility of contacting the owner of a 12-foot-by-20-foot building that sits behind the two businesses.
The building needs a new roof and some other minor repairs.
“In the long run, repairing it would be cheaper than buying a new one,” Smith said. “And there would be space left for some storage.”
No further action was taken.
Money from a fuel grant for advertising is being used to come up with a slogan to discourage littering.
“We can research other states and see what their slogans are,” Smith said.
He said Texas’ slogan is “Don’t Mess With Texas.” Board secretary Peggy Pase suggested, “Why Trash Wild and Wonderful?”
Smith said the board should come up with some ideas for the next meeting.
He said he wanted to set up a meeting with local municipalities to discuss litter grants.
“I can show them how to do a grant request,” he said. “A lot of them are not aware of what’s available out there.”
Smith said he would like to hold the next meeting in person at the election center at the plaza.
“It’s easy to get into and stay six feet apart. I’m going to look into it,” he said.
