W. Va officials comment

The Dominion Post

After pro-Trump protesters — some, even Trump supporters, have called them terrorists and insurrectionists — broke into the House and Senate chambers. The lawmakers were evacuated, and the Capitol was put on lockdown.

The Dominion Post contacted Sens. Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito to learn if they were safe and if they would be issuing comments on the violent assault on the Capitol.

All three offices wrote back to say the lawmakers were safe. Shortly after, the lawmakers issued brief comments.

Manchin said in a statement he also posted on Twitter, “We are okay and ready to get back to the Senate chamber to finish our work. These thugs cannot and will not run us off. We will continue to govern.”

Capito’s office directed The Dominion Post to her Twitter post: “This is the United States of America. This needs to stop right now. We don’t do this. It’s not who we are.”

McKinley’s office also pointed to his Twitter post: “The violence and destruction at the Capitol cannot be tolerated. Yes, there is frustration but in a democracy we need to channel that peacefully. This needs to stop now…..it’s not who we are.”

Gov. Jim Justice also expressed his displeasure on Twitter: “The violence that we are witnessing right now in Washington, D.C., is absolutely unacceptable and I condemn it in the strongest possible terms. People have every right to have their voices heard peacefully. But there is no place in our country for this type of activity.”
