Carole Squires

Carole Lee Bolyard Squires, 78, of York’s Run Road, Newburg, passed away Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born May 12, 1942, in Newburg, daughter of James W. Bolyard and Mary J. (Owens) Bolyard.

Carole was a member of Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church. She graduated from Fellowsville High School in 1960. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in education at Fairmont State College and a Master of Arts, plus 45 hours, in early childhood education from West Virginia University.

Carole worked as a secretary at Fellowsville Elementary, a telephone operator in Washington D.C., at Baby World factory in Grafton and at General Motors factory in Warren, Ohio. But her favorite and final job was as a kindergarten teacher. Carole taught kindergarten at Fellowsville and Newburg elementaries for more than 30 years. She was proud to have taught multi-generations of students during her career. She rarely went anywhere that she did not see a former student, who was excited to catch up with her. Carole retired in 2000 with 30 years of service. She then returned to the classroom in 2017, after the passing of her husband, teaching first grade and kindergarten in a split class, until she became ill in 2019.

Carole enjoyed vacations at the beach with her family. Spending time with her children and grandson was her favorite past time. Carole loved working in her flower gardens and spending weekends at Tygart Lake on her pontoon boat. Music — gospel and country — was another passion. She spent most Saturday nights at the Sagebrush Roundup Country Music Show, where she was a member.

Carole is survived by one son, Jeff Squires, companion, Becky Cain and children, Jude and Scarlett, of Newburg; one daughter, Jennifer Squires Biller, husband Chad and grandson Parker Donovan Biller; one sister Darlene Murray and husband Freeman Murray, of Newburg; many nieces and nephews, who she adored; and several special friends and neighbors, too numerous to list, who always helped her when needed through the years.

In addition to her parents, Carole was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Don, of 52 years, and one brother and sister-in-law, Lewis and Jeanette Bolyard.

Carole and her family wish to thank her wonderful Hospice team and Drs. Malla and Charles, at WVU Cancer Center, for their support. Due to COVID-19, at her request to protect those she loved, there will be no public viewing. A Graveside Service will be held for immediate family at Blackwood Cemetery at
3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31.

Friends and family may share their condolences and memories at the Bolyard Funeral Home website. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Carole’s memory to the Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church, C/O Twila Bailey, 1831 Chestnut Ridge Heights, Newburg, WV 26410 or Sagebrush Roundup 2580 Bunner Ridge Road, Fairmont, WV 26554. Bolyard Funeral Home is honored to serve the Squires family.
