Check out these Morgantown shops for unique gifts
Christmas is a day away and many shops in downtown Morgantown are open for last-minute gift shopping.
It’s not last-minute shopping unless it’s done Christmas Eve Day, said John Kuehn, of Spencer & Kuehn Fine Jewelry Studio. The studio will be open from9 a.m.-5 p.m. today.
At least one customer should visit during those hours. Every year the same man visits the store on the 24th, buys an item for his wife, who then later returns it and gets something else — an arrangement that is stress-free for them, Kuehn said.
Charles McEwuen, owner of Tanners Alley Leather, said his popular items include belts and wallets but there are a number of more interesting things such as cowhide rugs and leather leggings available. He will be open from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. today.
River Fair Trade will also be open 9 a.m.-2 p.m., and a little later if needed, as long as the owner can get home before the expected snowstorm hits, Shannon Dowling said.
AccuWeather is calling for a high of 54 with rain. Temperatures will drop to 21 tonight with the rain turning to snow and winter weather advisory from 7 p.m. until 1 p.m. Friday.
Dowling said she’s thankful for the community coming together and supporting small business this year and has been “pleasantly surprised” at the number of shoppers she’s had.
Popular gifts at River Fair Trade have been a bread basket with a warming stone that gets heated in the oven and two different types of socks — alpaca and the Conscious Steps line, which supports various nonprofits.
Joe Hagan, a 30-year Morgantown resident, was downtown grabbing some stocking stuffers Wednesday.
“Downtown Morgantown has great shops and this River Fair Trade always has great ideas and you get great advice from the people,” he said. “Same thing with Pinocchio’s. They’ve got ideas about toys and you can’t match it.”
Pinocchio’s Books and Toys will be open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. today. Selina Weimann said the holiday season has been better than expected and there are a number of cheap stocking stuffers for kids available. Popular ones include a hatch and grow turtle egg and glasses that change what Christmas lights look like.
Other open stores today include:

- Silver Pennies Jewelry Design Co. is open 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
- Pathfinder is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
