NEWBURG — Work on the Possum Hollow Road water main extension began Monday.
“I was told it should be completed in two weeks, weather-permitting,” Newburg Mayor Edgar Fortney said about the project.
Water from Lexington Coal’s closed deep mine seeped into the yards and wells on four properties outside of town in 2019. Those wells, which provided drinking water for the families, were contaminated.
The extension will allow Newburg to provide water to those families.
Once the extension is completed, it will be turned over to the town, Fortney said.
This will be the second water main extension Newburg has completed this year.
The town completed the Newburg-Independence water main extension in July, a year and a day after the completion warranty from the contractor, in case of any complications.
The project allowed the town to take the waterline as far as the former Independence School and provide water to about 24 homes.
Newburg had worked toward providing water to the neighboring unincorporated community of Independence since 2008.
