Nancy Comer

Nancy Jean Comer, 86, of Morgantown, died on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2020, at Mon Health Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born Sept. 15, 1934, in Wheeling, a daughter of the late John K. and Kathryn E. Wenzel.

Nancy grew up in Wheeling where her father’s family owned and operated Wenzel Maple Brand Meats, the largest meat packing business in the state which was opened by her great-grandfather in the late 1800s. She graduated from Wheeling High School in 1952 and attended West Virginia University. This is where she met the love of her life, her husband Phil, and they were wed on June 11, 1955, in Cumberland, Md.

Nancy and Phil began their married life together as an Army couple who were stationed at Fort Rucker in Alabama, Fort Knox in Kentucky and at Gary Air Force Base in Texas. Later on, they worked together at the Home for Crippled Children in Pittsburgh, where Nancy was a favorite of all the young men who she cared for. After moving to Morgantown, where her husband finished his education and began his career at WVU, Nancy sold real estate for many years with Dorsey & Kiger Realty. She also worked at Morgantown Florist and Smith & Shuman Dental offices, and upon her husband’s retirement from WVU, Nancy served as the secretary and office manager for his private counseling practice. Phil’s clients were often treated to a second therapy session with Nancy as they checked out. She was a natural at offering insightful support laced with common sense and good humor. Nancy was also known as a marvelous hostess and was a tremendous cook.

Nancy’s true passion was being a loving and devoted spouse to her husband whom she called “Her Phil” and he in turn referred to her as his “Golden Girl.” She was a wonderful homemaker and caring mother to her daughters, Vicki and Missy, and always welcomed their friends into their home. But perhaps the role Nancy treasured most of all was being the adoring grandmother to her precious grandchildren, Kate and Jackson. After the tragic death of their mother, Nancy lovingly took on the role of being “Super Grandma” to them and they were truly the light of her life.

She is survived by her beloved husband of over 65 years, Phil; daughter and spouse, Victoria “Vicki” Anne and Brian Hoover, of Morgantown; two precious grandchildren, Kathryn “Kate” Anne Wolfe and Jackson “Buddy” Davis Wolfe; special nieces, Sondra K. Britt and Erin Helmstetter; special nephews, Charles “Chip” White and Scott Pinter; her son-in-law, Gregory Wolfe; and God-daughters, Karen Downes and Mary Louise Rogers; along with so many other loving relatives and countless treasured family friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Melissa Sue Wolfe; her two sisters and their spouses, Zenith and Charles White and Joan and Eugene Pinter; her in-laws, Edmund and Helen Comer; sister-in-law and spouse, Linda and Andrew Straub; and many other belated loved ones.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, there will be no public services at this time. Nancy has been laid to rest at Beverly Hills Memorial Garden with a private family graveside service officiated by Pastor Ken Ramsey.

Her family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the caring and compassionate staff of Mon Health Medical Center (ICU in particular) for taking such wonderful care of Nancy, as well as Fiona-Morris Upward and the staff at Healthworks Rehab and Fitness.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to her grandchildren’s SMART529 Savings Plans to be used to help with their college educational expenses. Family and friends may make donations at: Ugift529.com by entering their secure, unique Ugift Codes: Kathryn’s K52-L8J and Jackson’s G3D-A43
