10-month- old twins were left unattended in unsecured house
KINGWOOD — State Police charged a woman for leaving her 10-month-old twins at home while she took her 3-year-old in the car and was arrested for drunk driving.
Shala Richelle Sapp, 36, of Morgantown, was freed on $5,000 bond. The incident occurred in Preston County, according to a criminal complaint by Sgt. A.S. Taylor.
According to the complaint, Sgt. Taylor was sent Monday to do a welfare check in Masontown, where a mother reportedly left her infants in the house alone and drove away in a white Mercury sedan.
Taylor said he saw a car matching that description traveling east on W.Va. 7 “unusually slow” and going left of center twice. He stopped the car, and Sapp was driving.
“The defendant was irrational, spoke very loudly and was argumentative,” Taylor wrote. He observed an unrestrained toddler in the front seat, who was identified by Sapp as her 3-year-old.
Sapp failed three field sobriety tests, according to the complaint. Records showed her driver’s license is suspended for unpaid fines,
“A check of the defendant’s residence revealed that her two 10-month-old twins were left in the unsecured house in swings. It was noted that the residence was in deplorable condition,” according to the complaint.
Sapp is charged with child neglect creating risk of injury, DUI with child endangerment, child safety seat violation, driving on a suspended license and no inspection sticker on the car,
