The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at West Virginia University announced its 14th annual Irving Goodman Lecture for 2020 is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday and Tuesday online.
Taking advantage of this year’s circumstances, OLLI expanded this educational opportunity and created a two-day event around the theme, “Elders as Activists,” exploring and celebrating the importance of older adults making their voices heard.
The event will open Monday with a keynote address by Libby Traubman titled, Re-Fired, Not Retired: Elder Activism.
Traubman was a founding member of the Elders Action Network, where she currently serves on the board and shares in the many activities offered by the elder volunteers nation-wide. In 1991, she and her husband co-founded the 29-year-old Jewish-Palestinian Living Room Dialogue of San Mateo. For more than 30 years Traubman has helped bring “enemies” together in successful, public peace processes: among Soviets and Americans; Armenians and Azerbaijanis; Jews and Palestinians; and in 2010, Muslim and Christian Nigerians.
On Tuesday, two former residents of Morgantown, Sharon Goodman and Ann Payne, will share their experiences as activists in a panel discussion moderated by Cindy O’Brien.
In 2012, Payne organized a group of artists, including Goodman, to stage “Reflections: Homage to Dunkard Creek,” a collaborative installation art project paying tribute to the more than 160 species that perished in September 2009 due to an algae bloom in the creek. The exhibit invited viewers to consider the impact of water and energy policies on communities and the world.
Payne is active on her town’s sustainability committee, Frederick County Multifaith Climate Alliance and environmental concerns at the Frederick Friends Meeting (Quaker). Goodman is an artist, dancer and long-time activist.
Both events will be held via Zoom and will be free and open to the public.
