Neal Brown talks Iowa State, Oklahoma postponement, team health, improvements on this weeks Big 12 coaches call

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia head coach Neal Brown spoke during the Big 12 coaches teleconference Monday morning, heading into WVU’s (5-3, 4-3 Big 12) road game at No. 12 Iowa State (7-2, 7-1) on Saturday.

  • On what stands out most about Iowa State: “Consistent, really consistent. Defensively, they’ve got a number of their guys throughout conference play, playing at a high level. They make it difficult and don’t give you any easy yards. Offensively, I think (quarterback Brock) Purdy has played really well over the last month and a half of the season. And with those tight ends, it’s just unique. (Running back) Breece Hall is playing as good as any offensive player in our league right now.”
  • On the disappointment of the postponement of last week’s Oklahoma game: “It was disappointing but I understand. We’re in unique times and we’e done well managing it here, but that could change at any moment. I’m not naive. I understand where Oklahoma was coming from and I understand their position. Our plan and my hope is that we’ll play that game on Dec. 12.”
  • On what the team can improve on during the last two games: “We’re going to be tested with both these opponents. This is rare because we’ve already scouted pretty heavy our last opponent (Oklahoma) like we have our next opponent (Iowa State). I think it’s two of the teams playing as good as anyone in our league finishing up. Keys for us to win are we’re going to have to take care of the ball and we’ve got to establish a run game. Down the stretch, I think those are going to be critical pieces for us.”
  • On the team’s overall health and if the extra week off helped: “We probably would have rather not had that extra week, honestly. For his time of year, we’re in a good position. I think we’ll be pretty close to full strength as long as everything goes well this week going into the game.”
