John Ivan Merrill Sr., 84, devoted spouse, father and friend, died on Nov. 22, 2020.
John is survived by his spouse of 22 years, Shirley Overfield; his children, Jay Merrill (Janet), Eric Merrill, Mike Merrill (Marcie), Tamyra Merrill and Nikki Spradley (Dale), all of Morgantown; stepchildren, Kimberly Autrey (Randy) and Greg Overfield, of Pfafftown, N.C.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John was born in Morgantown to Lloyd Merrill and Mildred Wade Merrill. John had the privilege of having a loving uncle and aunt, Bob Wade and Frankie Wade, who helped raise and shape him into the man he became. He graduated from Morgantown High School in 1955 and had a long career as a Garment Cutter at Morgan Shirt Factory and later at Sycamore Lanes and attended Sabraton Baptist Church.
In retirement, he enjoyed traveling, country music shows and dancing with Shirley, often called the “dancing couple.” John loved spending time camping and in later years had a place at Big Bear Lake Camplands where he was known and loved by many.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Mildred Merrill; his uncle, Bob Wade; and his granddaughter, Amber Dawn Merrill.
Friends may call at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27 and 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, directly followed by a service at 11 a.m. and graveside service to follow. In lieu of flowers, please support your local Hospice.
