MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia head coach Neal Brown spoke during the Big 12 coaches teleconference Monday morning, heading into WVU’s (5-3, 4-3 Big 12) showdown with No. 14 Oklahoma (6-2, 5-2) on Saturday.
- On how Oklahoma has improved from its two early season losses: “They’re definitely playing their best football here in the last month. Some of that is Spencer Rattler maturing — a freshman quarterback with that talent that he has … he’s going to improve and he definitely has.
“Another thing, too, is they have [DE Ronnie Perkins and RB Rhamondre Stevenson] back in the lineup, and they’ve been a different team.”
- On the status of linebacker Josh Chander-Semedo: “He ran last week and he’s going to practice the early part of this week. We’re hopeful, not ready to say he’s ready to go, but we’re hopeful.”
- On why the Mountaineers have had so much success in pass defense this season: “The pass rush is always the best thing for good pass coverage, and that has definitely benefited us. I think that we’ve got two safeties that are veteran guys that do a really good job communicating. Jahmile Addae has done a really good job schematically, putting our guys in positions to be successful. Our corners have made steady improvement as the year’s gone on.”
- On Oklahoma’s ability to jump on teams early in the first quarter: “It’s something crazy — they’re 124-17 in the first quarter. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that. They’ve been able to score and get explosive plays early. They always mix it up and are a little bit different each week. Their speed is at a different level compared to other teams that you play week in and week out. Sometimes teams take a little bit of time to adjust to it.
