CHARLESTON, W.Va. — All good things must come to an end, including the best volleyball season in recent history for Morgantown High.
Although ending in the semifinals of the state tournament, head coach Erica Manor looked beyond the surface, noting she’s seeing improvement. That being that despite losing to No. 1 Musselman, MHS (22-6) took the Applemen to four sets, one more than last year.
Saturday was also a day of rematches, as the No. 4 Mohigans faced No. 5 Bridgeport in the quarterfinals, defeating them 3-1 — one set better than the 3-2 win over the Indians in regionals — before taking on the Lady Applemen, Manor’s alma mater.
The semifinals game was a rematch from last year’s state tournament when Manor and the Mohigans faced off against Shawn Martz and Musselman, a game which ended in a 3-0 sweep.
This time, after falling behind 2-0, MHS battled back in Set 3 to take it by a hair at 25-23. A final push by the Applemen ended any chance of the tie-breaker as they took the fourth set 25-18.
Senior Alayna Corwin led all hitters through both games with 29 kills while tacking on 26 digs and three aces. Grace Washburn, Emily Goldcamp and Issy Grushecky assisted Corwin on the strong attack with 15, 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Washburn added six digs, three blocks and three aces, while Grushecky had four blocks. Ella Voorhees had 38 digs, and freshman Paige Brock had 33 assists and six digs.
