KINGWOOD, W.Va. – Long-time Preston High football coach Jonathan Tennant’s resignation from his role became official Monday night at the Preston County Board of Education meeting, an unexpected decision coming at the end of his eighth season at the helm.
Despite the Knights’ final 3-7 record, the team is one year removed from their third-ever playoffs appearance and their first in 11 years. Since taking over in 2012, Tennant accumulated a 22-59 record, an improvement from the three seasons before Tennant’s hiring where the Knights were 1-29. The Knights never secured a winning season under Tennant, though, and their best record came in 2014 when the team ended 5-5.
The Knights season was riddled with injury and facility issues, forcing the team to play home games at other schools including Buckhannon-Upshur and University. In the same meeting that the BOE accepted Tennant’s resignation, they approved 3D Drilling and JNB Services LLC to demolish the condemned football field bleachers. Work will begin the week of Thanksgiving and is scheduled to be done by Christmas. The companies have volunteered time and equipment to complete the task.
