Preston County had 72.74% voter turnout

KINGWOOD — When the canvass was completed in Preston County Monday, the county had a 72.74% voter turnout.

Preston finished its canvass at 3:58 p.m. Monday, with no changes in winners of the contests.

Preston County Clerk Linda Huggins said there were 128 provisional ballots. Fifty were counted. The clerk also received 17 absentee ballots by mail. Of those, 14 were counted. The other three were postmarked after election day, so they were not counted.

In the end, a total of 14,701 ballots were counted in Preston. That’s from a total of 20,209 registered voters.

Huggins said because some of the state races in Preston are shared with other counties, “we will actually wait for the secretary of state’s word before certifying.”

Preston and Tucker share the 53rd House of Delegates seat, and Preston is part of the 14th Senate District, which includes several counties. Huggins said she has heard recounts have been requested in Tucker County, where the county commission and prosecutor’s races were close.
