WVSSAC reverses original plan, will initially allow football teams in ineligible counties to make state playoff bracket

The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission announced Saturday that it would initially allow football teams in orange or red counties to make the state football playoffs bracket, a reversal from a previous ruling by the governing body. The updated rule was first reported by WBOY’s Ryan Decker who was contacted by an unnamed WVSSAC representative.

The WVSSAC will follow metrics set by the weekly West Virginia Department of Education Re-Entry map or the daily state Department of Health and Human Resources map.

The decision does not finalize the bracket, but instead gives teams in counties with high COVID-19 exposure numbers an extra week to see if those numbers trend downward into safer territory.

The bracket set Saturday is final and should teams in ineligible counties, such as Martinsburg in Berkeley County, not see improved numbers they will be forced to forfeit and their opponent will move on to the next round.

This story will be updated with the playoff seedings once it is released by the WVSSAC.
