Preston deputies charge Huntington woman with felony child neglect

KINGWOOD — A Huntington woman is charged with endangering a 1-year-old child by leaving him near dangerous substances while she was unconscious.

Laura Sue Young, 36, was charged with felony child neglect creating risk of injury by Preston Sheriff’s Deputy T.A. Nestor.

According to the criminal complaint, on Saturday police found Young unconscious and unresponsive in a vehicle belonging to Valley Point Feed and Supply. About 50 yards away was her 2019 Subaru Outback.

“The child was unsupervised with the vehicle running and the windows up. A strong odor of marijuana was within the car. A loaded .357 Magnum handgun was directly in front of the child, unsecured and positioned in the driver side door compartment,” according to the complaint.

Officers found marijuana and 29 empty Fireball alcohol beverage containers in the car. Several unopened containers were accessible to the child, as were prescription medications on the front seat.

Young refused a secondary chemical breath test but failed a preliminary breath test, according to the complaint.

Her bond was set at $25,000. She was in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail Monday.
