We don’t always endorse an incumbent, but when we do, it’s because he/she has done a good job. After interviewing both Ed Hawkins and Jeffrey Arnett, we see no reason not to elect Hawkins back to the Monongalia County Commission.
Over his years on the commission, Hawkins has shown himself to be a hardworker. He goes out of his way to reach Mon County residents in the outlying areas: He attends community dinners and purposely seeks out small, oft-overlooked areas. He also recognizes the importance of being accessible as an elected official. If you call for him, he will call you back. Governing is just as much about listening as it is responding.
Hawkins has been a vocal supporter of local fairs and festivals and has played an active role in reviving, revitalizing and continuing the festivities. He also has a good working relationship with community leaders, from both the public and private sector, and that cooperation has paved the way for successful partnerships.
Hawkins treats his position on the Monongalia County Commission as a full-time job. We appreciate the dedication he has shown and the work he has done, and we hope he will continue to provide his excellent service for the residents of Mon County.
