Two volunteers with Friends of Decker’s Creek cleaning up a camp site along the rail-trail discovered human remains inside of an “old coke oven” on Wednesday night.
That’s according to Morgantown’s Interim Police Chief Eric Powell.
Officers responded to the rail-trail, near the Interstate 68 overpass, about 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Powell said.
The volunteers told officers they were cleaning up a camp site and found what seemed to be human remains in an old coke oven in a wooded area, Powell said.
The officers confirmed the remains were human and detectives were called in to process the scene, investigate the death and are attempting to identify the victim, Powell said. No forms of identification were found.
The remains are being taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.
