A man was arrested after he allegedly led deputies on a high-speed chase through Morgantown.
Hayden L. Hilling, 18, of Morgantown, is charged with fleeing from an officer in a vehicle with reckless indifference.
On Tuesday, Deputy J. Cunningham saw a maroon Toyota Corolla drive in the wrong lane of traffic on West Run Road multiple times, according to a criminal complaint. Sheriff Perry Palmer said the chase started about 7:39 p.m.
Just before the intersection of West Run Road and Riddle Avenue, Cunningham activated his cruiser’s lights and sirens and the driver of the Corolla “immediately accelerated” and headed down West Run Road towards Van Voorhis Road, the complaint said.
The Corolla passed other vehicles in the opposite lane at speeds over 90 mph, the complaint said. The chase continued to University Avenue at 50 mph and the Corolla struck another vehicle at the intersection of 8th Street while “throwing unknown objects out of the vehicle.”
The chase then passed the Mountain Lair where pedestrians and another vehicle were almost hit when the driver of the Corolla brought it onto the sidewalk at more than 60 mph, the complaint said.
The Corolla then got on Dorsey Avenue where another vehicle was hit and crashed into a guardrail, according to the complaint. Its driver got out and ran through Marjorie Gardens into Blue Grass Village.
The Morgantown Police Department located the suspect, who was identified as Hilling, near Mississippi Street, the complaint said.During the foot chase, Cunningham injured his hand and required several stiches, Palmer said.
Hilling is being held in North Central Regional Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond.
