Ribbon cutting for new section of West Virginia Northern Rail Trail will be Oct. 17

KINGWOOD — The Preston County Parks & Recreation Commission (PCPaRC) will host a ribbon cutting ceremony in celebration of the opening of the new West Virginia Northern Rail-Trail 2 p.m. Oct. 17.

The event will take place at the trail head across the street from the Craig Civic Center on Tunnelton Street, Kingwood, and will include music, food trucks and a chance to walk the new trail.

The county, with funding from the West Virginia Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Program, completed construction of the 10-feet wide, 2 mile-long multi-use trail, which stretches from near the civic center to the concrete plant.

Stone Paving Inc., of Reedsville, performed trail construction over the past few months. This segment of trail is the northernmost section of the overall West Virginia Northern Rail-Trail.

PCPaRC is committed to creating healthy recreation and transportation opportunities for people of all ages and abilities in Preston County.
The trail has access to county trail head parks, city park, city pool, Buckwheat Festival fairgrounds, and the downtown business districts of Kingwood and Tunnelton. Parking will be available at the civic center.

The project is the result of collaborative efforts by PCPaRC, Preston County Commission, Friends of the Cheat, Preston Rail-Trail Committee, West Virginia Department of Transportation, and many supportive local organizations and citizens.
