KINGWOOD — A Morgantown man is accused of crashing his truck into a pole near the Kingwood Walmart Saturday, then fleeing, leaving the vehicle to burn.
Jonathan Earl Strang, 55, was charged with DUI, obstructing an officer, providing false information to a trooper and leaving the scene of an accident where property was damaged.
According to a criminal complaint by State Trooper J.L. Anglin, he was called about 4:32 p.m. Saturday to the crash on W.Va. 7. He found a Chevrolet Silverado that had hit a power pole engulfed in flames.
Multiple witnesses described the driver, including that he was wearing a yellowish colored hat and walked toward Walmart.
Store managers provided video surveillance showing a man matching witnesses’ descriptions walking through the store, then going outside and towards the woods below Route 7.
Emergency personnel told police they found a man walking on Dogtown Road, down the hill from Walmart. According to the complaint, the man denied being involved in an accident, but the trooper found the yellowish hat on him.
The man, who was identified as Strang, refused field sobriety tests but agreed to a breath test, which showed his blood alcohol level at .119. The legal limit to drive in West Virginia is .08.
