WEIRTON, W.Va. – Opening its season weeks behind their opponent, miscues would plague Trinity Christian (0-1) and allow Madonna to run away with the game down the stretch for a 44-12 win.
There were good things happening, though. After Madonna received the opening kickoff and returned it to midfield, Levi Teets forced a fumble on the first play of the Blue Dons’ drive. A quick recovery by the sophomore would give Trinity the ball, but after driving down the field to the red zone, the Warriors would turn the ball over on a failed fourth-down attempt.
After exchanging possessions, Madonna got on the board at end of the first quarter to take an 8-0 lead. Then, things began to snowball as Madonna jumped ahead to an 18-0 at halftime, two points coming off a safety in the second quarter.
The Warriors put up two scores in the fourth, both by senior Calvin Blunt Jr. After helping lead the Warriors on the ground, Blunt broke away for a long 81-yard rushing touchdown. He then added a 30-yard score in the air, but down big the Warriors were unable to make up lost ground from penalties and two turnovers.
In total, Blunt rushed 12 times for 155 yards and the score, as well as four receptions for 52 yards and the TD. Outside of his big play on defense, Teets logged 73 yards on three kickoff returns and 13 yards on a punt return. The sophomore added 19 yards on six catches as well.
A strong Blue Dons defense put intense pressure on sophomore quarterback Drew Boczek throughout the night, forcing a fumble and an interception. They also were fast to stop him on the ground, as Boczek tallied minus-14 yards on eight rushes. Despite that, he made up for it in the air with a 15 of 31 performance for 116 yards and the lone TD to Blunt.
Trinity returns to action on Friday against Tug Valley.
