WVU Monongalia County Extension 4-H program hosts Kindness Scavenger Hunt

Newsroom@DominionPost.com

The Monongalia County 4-H Program kicked off  a countywide kindness scavenger hunt Friday, which   runs through Oct. 23.

WVU Monongalia County Extension Service will use a team of volunteers to help “hide” a clover in a favorite, recognizable place and put a close-up picture of the clover on the county Facebook page. When the community members find the clover, there will be a kindness activity to complete. The community member submits a picture of their kindness activity (like an inspirational sidewalk chalk message) and is invited to take a prize.

There will be eight locations throughout the county. This activity encourages exploring the county, completing kindness activities and enjoying a scavenger hunt — all of which can be done while socially distancing. The hope is that this Kindness in Action Scavenger Hunt will give the community ways to improve the kindness of the county.

To participate, check out their Facebook page “WVU Monongalia County Extension Service,” where  clues and hints as to where the clovers are hidden can be found. Visit each site and complete the kindness challenge, then take to a prize.

Some of the kindness activities include a concrete symbol of kindness, such as inspirational sidewalk messages, postcard to first responders, picking up a piece of litter, decorating a card and signing a gratitude card. Other scavenger stops will focus on self-kindness, like completing a health challenge, writing a positive word and drawing a symbol that represents the word Heart (one of the four Hs in 4-H).

The participants will snap a picture to share that they did the Kindness Challenge and share it on social media with the hashtag #4Hkindnessinaction or email it to MonongaliaCountyExtension@mail.wvu.edu. The prizes are very kid friendly, so families are encouraged to participate, although everyone is welcome.

This project is made possible with support by Volunteer West Virginia. The WVU Monongalia County Extension 4-H Program received a mini-grant from Volunteer West to host a Be Kind, COVID-19 volunteer project. Volunteer West Virginia started the Be Kind, COVID-19 campaign to spread kindness and volunteerism during the pandemic. To learn more visit www.volunteer.wv.org.
