Harry Deeley

Harry J. Deeley Jr. (Jean), 97, died on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020, at the home of his daughter in Norfolk, Va., after a long and rewarding life.

He was born Dec. 26, 1922, in Morgantown, son of the late Harry and Hattie Deeley.

A World War II veteran, he served his country from June 1943-December 1945 in the U.S. Naval Armed Guard as a gunner’s mate protecting cargo ships delivering supplies to the war effort.

He was a devoted husband and wonderful father. A life-long resident of Morgantown, Harry loved time spent with grandsons, Brian and David, who, along with their families, provided him with much needed care and support while he lived alone.

He also enjoyed camping, gardening and making homemade dandelion and crabapple wine. He retired from the auto body repair industry. Prior to moving from Morgantown, he looked forward to working out and visiting with friends at HealthWorks.

He is survived by three children, Larry Deeley (Donna), of Pounding Mill, Va., Sandra Strickler (Bill), of Mount Dora, Fla., and Susan Steele (David), of Norfolk, Va.; and three grandchildren Brian (Lisa), David (Meagan) and Zachery.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Doris Lillian (Manning) Deeley; his brother, Jack; and his sister, Patricia (DeProspero) McTighe.

A private family graveside service was held on Friday, Oct. 2, 2020, at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, Westover.
