WVU resumes in-person classes

West Virginia University welcomed students back to in-person classes Monday.

The decision to transition from online classes — which happened on Sept. 7 — came after university officials were satisfied that the number of COVID-19 cases  was trending downward.

WVU’s dashboard on Monday showed that from Sept. 21-Sunday, there were 39 positive coronavirus cases, all from students, with a 2.61% positive rate among students, faculty and staff.

The shift to virtual learning was made Sept. 7, a little more than two weeks after classes began in Morgantown, because of an initial increase of positive student cases, as well as concern about a potential spike in cases following reports during the Labor Day weekend of parties attended by people who should have been in quarantine.

The Dominion Post previously reported that WVU officials said the same volume of in-person classes will be held in Morgantown as when the semester began Aug. 26. The university also said it will continue to test students who show signs of COVID-19, as well as those who are at higher risk of exposure.
