Work begins to tear down house owned by city
KINGWOOD — Demolition began Thursday on the city owned house at the Maplewood Cemetery in Kingwood.
City council decided it was cheaper to remove the house, which had been unoccupied for years, than to repair it. The house once housed the cemetery caretaker and has been used most recently for storage.
Mayor Jean Guillot said the city needs to maintain its properties, if it expects citizens to maintain theirs.
Browns Mill LLC was the only bidder on demolishing the house, with a bid of $11,280. City crews will cap the site with dirt, mulch and seed it.
The city previously paid $5,600 to remove asbestos from the house. Of that, $3,000 was paid with a grant.
