MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — WVU head coach Neal Brown spoke during the Big 12 coaches teleconference Monday morning. Here is what he had to say:
On if he called all the plays offensively and defensively he wanted to during the 56-10 win over Eastern Kentucky last Saturday:
Brown: “We ran a lot of plays offensively at 86. I think we had about 90 calls once you take out penalties. But we called basically everything we planned to going into the game. We were pretty simple, which is what we wanted to do. A lot of that was due to it being the first game. Some of that was because of the youth that we were playing — a lot of guys playing their first action. We got everything called we wanted to offensively. Defensively, not as many calls. I think we had 49 accountable snaps. On purpose, we did not show a whole lot.”
If the upcoming bye week gives him more time to do more evaluation than after a typical season-opener:
Brown: “It’s different. Really what we did was with the nature of the way the calendar was laid out, we really, with conditioning and physical with the way we practiced, tried to get (Sept.) 26 to the point where we’re ready, football-wise. That’s how we’ve gone about our preparation — not talking to the kids about that but from a staff standpoint — conditioning and from a physicality in practice, all those type of things. It’ll be kind of a mix between a normal bye week and a camp-style practice. We’ll practice at least four times this week and we’ll do it live vs. each other.”
On allowing true freshman quarterback Garrett Greene to play in the fourth quarter:
Brown: “I’m glad we got to play him, for sure. That was the hope going into the game that we’d get him to play some. He was up and down. I thought. The only time I got on him was because I thought he danced on the sideline a little bit. When you’re up by that score, you don’t need to do that. But he played the game with great energy. He has extreme , which is a positive. I thought he got the ball out of his hand, he ran the ball pretty effectively. His first play wasn’t very good and he got hit, but I think he learned from that. He got a lot of snaps and for a true freshman making his first playing time, I think he’s going to play a lot of football here.”
Quick injury update
Offensive lineman Michael Brown went down with an injury during the second half, but Neal Brown said he believes the senior will be fine moving forward.
