NEWBURG — Just because COVID-19 has changed the way some cities will celebrate Halloween doesn’t mean kids will have to go without their candy.
There will be no door-to-door trick-or-treating in Newburg this year. But children will still be able to dress up and go trick-or-treating.
Newburg Mayor Edgar Fortney said Tuesday residents who want to hand out treats can do so from their vehicles. He said cars and trucks can line up on Railroad Street on Halloween and hand out treats to the local children.
Fortney said the vehicles can be safely distanced from each other, and children can go from car-to-car to collect treats.
He said anyone who does not want to give out treats themselves can have a participating friend or relative hand them out instead.
Also discussed at the council meeting was replacing the town’s garbage truck.
Fortney said the current truck is no longer in service. He said it had to be towed last Saturday, was repaired, started up and broke down a second time.
No further action was taken on the truck.
In other business, the town plans to repair some of its streets before winter sets in.
The next meeting of the Newburg Council will be 6 p.m. Oct. 6.
