Alfred Nichols, 83, of Little River, S.C., formerly of Morgantown, passed away suddenly while working in his yard at home. He was born on July 9, 1936, in Morgantown, son of the late Samuel Lucas Nichols and Della (Corulli) Nichols.
Alfred graduated from Morgantown High School, attended WVU and went on to serve in the United States Air Force. Al moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C., in the late ‘70s where he was the proprietor of several businesses, including a commercial real estate company, several restaurants, a commercial linen service, a restaurant kitchen designer and as a retailer of new and used restaurant equipment.
Al was a genuine, generous and loving family man. He loved his family and extended family more than anything and his real joy was the time spent in the kitchen or around the table with his loved ones sharing family recipes and traditions along with great food, drink and stories of days gone by and days yet to come; a family practice instilled in him from his parents. He inevitably leaves a large void in our family’s traditions and will be deeply missed by all who knew him, his warmth and his strikingly infectious smile.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marsha (Schuster) Nichols; daughters, Monica Nichols and Andrea Coleman and husband, Mathew, with whom both daughters reside along with their children in Cary, N.C.; grandchildren, Emilie, Andrew and Daniel Coleman; sister, Mary and brother-in-law, Dewey “Smith” Hastings, of Morgantown; and several nieces, nephews and several great-nieces and -nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Lucas Nichols Jr., and his nephew, Samuel Lucas Nichols III (Sammy).
Cremation services were provided in South Carolina. He will be laid to rest alongside his family at East Oak Grove cemetery at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to help local veterans to Operation Welcome Home 452 Mylan Park Lane Morgantown, WV 26501.
